Role in the Transfiguration

Giving of the Law
·      Exodus 19:1-9
o   Moses gets ready to receive the law on Mt. Sinai
·      Exodus 20-31
o   Moses receives the Law from God
o   Much of the rest of the Torah also describes the Law
·      Exodus 32:1-6
o   Golden Calf, before the stone is dry, Israelites already sinning
o   Moses intercedes for the people with God (Ex. 32:11)
o   Moses sees what's going on for himself, gets angry, breaks tablets (Ex. 32:19)
o   New Tablets are made (Ex. 34:1)

What is the Purpose of the Law?
1.    Moral- The ways we are meant to live with each other and with God
2.    Health- Practices to help lead a long, healthy life
3.    Setting Israel apart
·      Makes the Israelites unique
·      A sign to other nations (think Song of Simeon. Also Solomon)

Imperfection
o   Moses sins in not trusting God
o   Not allowed to enter the Promised Land
·      Demonstrates:
o   Depth of sin, we struggle to live as we should
o   Need for renewal in humanity (think back to Noah)

Redemption
·      Deuteronomy 34:4- God shows Moses land
·      Transfiguration- Finally enters land
o   Shows Jesus has completed the work of the law, left unfinished

o   Also represents Grace Jesus offers to all
