Faith Fact- St. Swithun

St. Swithun (c.800-863) is a favorite of mine, in part because of his connection with Winchester Cathedral, where I received my call to ordained ministry. He served as Bishop of Winchester, and is the patron saint for Winchester Cathedral. Many pilgrims have come to visit his shrine in the Cathedral over the years.

St. Swithun has a particularly wonderful miracle story. One day when he was walking across the main bridge in Winchester, Swithun noticed a young woman. She was being bullied by the workmen on the bridge to the point that she dropped her basket of eggs. Swithun bent down to help the woman pick up her belongings. As he picked up the eggs, they were miraculously made whole!

This is a wonderful reminder of what God does in us. We too are broken, but God through Jesus Christ has made us whole. That is the core of our faith, and all of us as saints are called to be reminders of what Jesus has done for us in the world, just like Swithun.
