I studied at St. John's College, a Great Books school where students learn by reading books, everything from Plato to Einstein. What always surprised people about this school was how many students were people of faith. Perhaps more surprising was how many people who were not of faith become fascinated by faith. Some started book groups to study additional texts by theologians and other great religious thinkers. I once heard a story from some friends about how one student who was firmly in the atheist camp ended up becoming a Roman Catholic priest.

In actuality, this is not as odd as one might think. Philosophy, literally "the love of wisdom", is about learning the Truth. As we as Christians know, there is a spiritual component to Truth.

The search for Truth, if done well and done right, always leads to God. That is the lesson we learn from the Wise Men. Here are these great thinkers and astronomers of their day out looking for the Truth. What they end up finding is the Savior and Redeemer of the world: God in human form.

We shouldn't fear our studies or science or anything. If done well, they can only lead us to a more full and deep understanding of God. If done well, they can help us in conjunction with Scripture to better understand and know the Savior and Redeemer of the world.
