Today's Gospel reading is an important lesson that context matters. What matters for this reading is what has come before, which is that Jesus is sending the Twelve out to preach to the children of Israel.

The speech Jesus gives is one meant to both prepare and reassure the Twelve. So far, Jesus has been upfront about what the Twelve will face, and he continues to be so here in this passage.

The task Jesus gives the Twelve will not be an easy one. Just as Jesus has faced persecution, so they will too.

But there is also hope because God will look after them and God cares for them. We know this in part because Jesus tells the Twelve so. We also know because of what Jesus does. He takes the time to prepare them to go out and minister to others. Jesus takes the time to make sure they are ready for their task.

Ministering in the world can be a very scary thing. It is a big responsibility to represent Jesus to all around us. It can be a daunting task.

But Jesus has not left us unprepared. We have the word of Scripture as an example and tool of discernment. We have the Holy Spirit to guide us as well. Finally, we have the gifts that God has given us that equip us for the ministries God calls us to do.

Don't be afraid. Even in the scary times of ministry, God is with you as a help and guide. God is with you, through all your ministry.
