Scripture talks a great deal about helping the widow and orphan. Torah speaks of helping them, the prophets speak up for them, and deacons were established in the New Testament to make sure all the widows in the community were being served.

Widows and orphans in biblical times were those who could not take care of themselves because they had no one who could provide for them. The biblical command to help them is a command to help those who need help in our society.

In the world of COVID-19, the "widows and orphans" are those whose immune systems are the most vulnerable, which includes the oldest and youngest of our population. By working from home and practicing social distancing, you are ensuring both that you do not contract COVID-19 and that you do not spread the disease either. Even if you are young and healthy, making sure you stay healthy could help save the lives of those around you.

Help the widow and orphan among you. Rather, help those with weaker immune systems. For now, stay home and practice social distancing.
