When you stop and think about it, we as humans may not be the only ones who use tools, but we do seem to be the only creature that attaches part of our identity to objects. This makes sense when it comes to things like our phones and our computers which have personal information pertaining to ourselves and ourselves alone.

With other objects it’s a bit harder to see why or how our identity is tied up in the stuff we have. Sometimes our identity can be so tied in our possessions that it’s hard to get it free.

As long as our identity is intrinsically tied to something other than ourselves, we will have a hard time tying our identity to the one thing it would be tied to: God. We cannot serve God if we are serving something, anything, else, as we hear in our Gospel reading this evening.

Take some time to think about it. What is it that you need to remove yourself from that’s keeping you separated from God? What other masters might you be serving? How can you remove yourself from the clutches of those other masters so that you can serve God and God alone?
