For my undergraduate studies, I went to St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. St. John’s focuses on studying the Great Books of Western Civilization. One of the things that often surprises people about St. John’s is how many people came to Faith from the program. It is less of a surprise to those of us from St. John’s.

Because we were a discussion-based school, we were open to the Truth outside us. We saw how much there is to know, and just how little we, as humans, know of it. That made us much more open to seeing the ways God acts in the world.

Bishop Joseph Butler was a similar mindset. He accepted the use of reason by us human being, and in using reason, he saw that God acts in ways we do not always fully understand in this world. Rather than see disproof for God and Scripture, Bishop Butler saw God’s work all around him.

Would that we could be so open to seeing God’s works in the world, and using the gift of reason to do so. Would that we can God through the use of our reason too.
