One of the many things we do a disservice to ourselves in the church by forgetting is that we are not of this world. We are not called to be like the world is. We are not called to measure success the same way. We are not called to be cruel. We are not called to “store treasure on earth.”

Instead, we are called to be those of Jesus. We are called to follow the One whose ministry ended in failure and death. We are called to follow the One who was willing to die instead of let us destroy ourselves. We are called to reach out to souls and build them up as part of the Kingdom of God.

Being Jesus Christ’s means we are called to speak to the world and help it to change. But we are not called to be a part of it, and we are certainly not called to follow its ways. We should never forget that.
