The diligence our Gospel speaks of today is extremely appropriate for Hugh of Lincoln. As a prior to a monestary, he rebuilt the lodgings which helped attract more people to the order. As a bishop, he was unwilling to blindly accept the king’s wishes, yet employed a great diplomacy that kept the royal anger in check.
Hugh of Lincoln worked to prepare things to better do God’s work in the world. His focus was serving our Lord. We might not all have the gifts Hugh of Lincoln did, but we can do God’s will in this world with the same fervor and tenacity. My hope is that we never forget that.
