Our readings for the Ascension today mirror what we have been hearing in Jesus’ final discourse with the Disciples in the Gospel according to John.

It is a sad and strange thing for Jesus to ascend into Heaven after being Resurrected from the dead. However, Jesus’ leaving means the Disciples will receive the Holy Spirit. This means we will receive the Spirit too.

Receiving the Spirit is important. The Spirit is the part of the Trinity that remains with us always. The Holy Spirit is God’s abiding presence with us throughout our lives.

Even if we do not understand the Ascension and even if it makes us a little sad, we have a great deal to be thankful for. We may not see Jesus or have His physical presence with us, yet He remains with us in this world through the Holy Spirit’s abiding with us always.
