Faith Fact- The Importance of Sabbath and Rest

In Leviticus 23, we see God lay down the particulars of the Sabbath to the Lord, proclaimed as a “day of solemn rest”.

It is easy to fall into a pattern of thinking of the Sabbath simply as another requirement for us to fulfill. However, as Jesus points out to the Pharisees in Mark, “the Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.”

God from the beginning shows us the importance of rest. Even God is seen to rest after the Creation of the world. Because of the importance of rest, God made sure to provide the space for it in Torah.

Part of rest is allowing ourselves to be in the presence of God. That is why the Sabbath is so important and why we take time during our resting to come together and worship the Lord.
