All three parts of our reading from Luke today share one theme: listening and thus paying attention.
In the “light under a bushel” (or in this case a vessel) illustration, Jesus literally calls on His listeners to pay attention to how they listen.
When Jesus’ mother and siblings call on Him to meet them, Jesus uses the occasion to make the point that those who listen to the word of God are His true family.
Finally, Jesus uses just a few words to calm the storm. This not only shows that nature will listen to Him, but it also provides an opportunity for His Disciples to hear Him and witness a great sign of who Jesus really is.
Jesus wants those around Him to listen. We should take this opportunity to listen too so that we might know what it is that God wants from us and follow our Lord Jesus wherever He may lead.
