We often associate Francis with animals, or even with his stigmata, the possession of the marks on Jesus’ hands, side, and feet.

Yet Francis should be better know for his connection with the final words of our Gospel today: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest…. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Francis began life squandering his father’s money away, until his life changed in finding God and developing a passion for helping the poor. When things changed and Francis started giving away possessions to the poor, his father, who had tolerated his lifestyle before, became upset, taking the matter to the church. There, Francis gave away all he had left, including his clothes, and dedicated his life to serving the poor as one of the poor in the monastic life. To this day, the monastic order of the Franciscans continues his work.

Francis lived into Jesus’ command to leave all behind and follow him. This is what we should remember him for. We should also ask ourselves if we can do the same.
