Not Christ, But Following Christ

In the Christian Faith, we accept that only one perfect being has ever existed on earth: Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah, the Christ. As far as we humans are concerned, Paul refers to Psalms 14 and 53 in Romans 3:10 saying:

"None is righteous, no not one."

Yet Jesus, in His perfection, is able to save us from our sinfulness. While Paul speaks of this in Romans 5, his most famous quote comes from 1 Corinthians 15:22 where he states:

"For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive."

Scripture calls on us to live in the example of Jesus Christ in this world. There are whole epistles, such as 1 Corinthians, dedicated to how we live in this example as a community.

One of the great calls to be Christ-like in the world is through humility. In Philippians 2, specifically verses 5-7, Pauls says:

"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men."

1 Peter 2:21 also tells us,

"For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in His steps."

In that humility, we are called to remember that without Jesus, we would still live in sin and death instead of following His example. It is not anything we do that washes away our sins and sinfulness; it is the work of Christ Jesus.

In other words, we are called to be Christ-like, not to claim or pretend that we are Jesus Himself.

Jesus warns us of such pretenders in Luke 21:8 where He tells the Disciples,

"Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in My Name, claiming, 'I am he.' and 'The time is near.' Do not follow them."

If we are truly to be followers of Jesus, we can only follow Him and not any others. We cannot claim to be Christ Jesus when we know we are not. We have to be humble and realize we cannot save ourselves, for only Jesus Christ can cleanse us from our death and sin.
