There are many ways we can receive help on our spiritual journey. Pastoral Meetings/Conferences/Visitations with your pastor are generally a good place to start.
Sometimes, though, we may need a little more help on our journey. This is where Pastoral Counseling comes in.
Pastoral Counseling is basically the same as meeting with a psychologist, psychiatrist, or therapist since a pastoral counselor will need to be licensed to practice in whatever state or states they reside and work in. The key difference is that pastoral counselors have a focus on spiritual matters as well as mental health ones in their training. They are better equipped to take your Faith into account when working with you.
This isn't to say you can't get the help you need from psychologists, psychiatrists, or therapists. Many online resources, such as Psychology Today, will allow you to fill in religion as a criteria for what you are looking for. Sometimes you can find a list of people who are specifically trained in Christian Counseling. Whoever you see, it is important that they take your beliefs seriously because they are a key part of your journey and your journey in health.
No matter who you are and what you are going through, we all need some help at times, and a mental health professional can be vital in that process. It is not a sign of weakness to ask for help, but instead a sign of strength. That is what our Faith is all about, for we do not obtain the gifts of the Resurrection on our own but through the Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.
